1. Bert Pijls, CEO, Hellenic Bank

Born on 27 December 1965 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Studied Business Administration (B.B.A.) at Nijenrode University, Breukelen, Netherlands and International Management (M.I.M.) at the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird), Phoenix, Arizona, United States of America.

Commenced his career in 1990 in Citigroup, where for the following ten years he worked in the positions of Financial Analyst, Assistant Branch Manager, Sales & Service Manager, District Director, Managing Director and Marketing Director in Germany, Belgium and the USA. In 1999 took over as Executive Vice President, Strategic Planning of the New York-based Internet Financial Services start-up Moneyunion Inc. A year later, he moved to Egg Banking Plc as a Banking Product Director in London and in 2002 as a Programme Director in Paris. Joined American Express in 2004 as Vice President, International Personal and Small Business Lending in London. Returned to Citigroup in 2005 as Country Business Manager, Consumer & SME in the Czech Republic then in 2008 became CEO, Egg Banking Plc and Managing Director, Consumer Banking UK and in 2011 Managing Director, Business Development & Re-engineering, EMEA Consumer. In 2012, joined British Gas / Centrica as Managing Director, Customer Services & Commercial until June 2014.

Since 12 January 2015 holds the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Hellenic Bank Public Company Limited Group, being the first Bank CEO to receive verification and approval of the newly established European Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM).

Appointed Member of the Board of Directors of Hellenic Bank on 16 January 2015 and also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pancyprian Insurance Limited on 17 March 2015 and Hellenic Alico Life Insurance Company Limited on 25 February 2015.

2. George Appios, Managing Director and CEO of Piraeus Bank Cyprus

Mr. George Appios started his career in London at an accounting and auditing firm and then in the Finance Department of a civil engineering multi-national company in London.  In 1995 he joined Hellenic Bank in Cyprus as Head of the Organisation and Methods Department.  In 2000 he was appointed Chief Financial Officer of the Group and later on Senior Manager and Member of the Executive Committee of Hellenic Bank. In January 2008, he assumed General Manager role at Piraeus Bank Cyprus, where he led the International Banking Unit, Payments, Credit, Finance, Treasury Back Office, Organisation and Methods, ΙΤ and Technical Services.  Since February 2013, he is serving as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from City University of London. He is also a Chartered Accountant.

3. Nicholas Hadjiyiannis, CEO – Cooperative Central Bank Ltd

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation and of Demetra Investment Fund.

He is a graduate of the English School, Nicosia, holds a degree in Quantity Surveying from the University of Reading, UK, and a Master’s in Shipping Trade and Finance from City University Business School in England.

He has extensive banking and financial experience with an international career, having worked for over 10 years at BNP Paribas and Merrill Lynch in Athens, Cyprus, London and Geneva. He has also worked at the Bank of Cyprus in Athens and at Forester Life in London. He returned to Cyprus from Geneva in 2007 to work at the Cyprus Popular Bank, where he served as Manager of Private Banking.

He serves as the CEO (December 2015) of the Cooperative Central Bank.

He is a fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), UK. He also holds professional licenses from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission to provide advisory and portfolio management services, an Investment Management Certificate (Institute of Investment Managers, UK) and was certified as an investment advisor by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in England and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

He has taught finance and investment at the American College in Athens, the University of Nicosia and the European University Cyprus.
As of May 2016 he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation.

Savvas has more than 18 years of professional experience and specializes in the Financial Services industry, namely banks, insurance and as asset management and is currently leading the Financial Services industry sector at EY in Cyprus. He holds a BA (Econ) from the University of Manchester. He is an FCA-ICAEW, a Chartered Financial Analyst, a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Cyprus (ICPAC), a member of the CFA Society of Cyprus and a founding member of Cyprus Investment Funds Association (CIFA).

During his career, he led numerous audit engagements and has participated in a number of advisory and risk related projects as well as supported a number of banks with their IFRS policies and methodologies and implementation in both Cyprus and abroad.

Christos is the Deputy Managing Director of KPMG Cyprus. He is also heading the Funds Services Practice of KPMG in Cyprus since 2011. During such time Christos was actively involved in the registration of a large number of funds in various industries such as renewable energy, shipping and the financial sector. Christos further contributed to the registration and licensing of UCITS Management Companies in Cyprus as well as and a number of AIFMs. As Head of KPMG Academy Christos has delivered, among others, several seminars on funds outlining and explaining the impact of the European Directives regarding UCITS and AIFM in Cyprus. He has in addition written and published several articles on the regulation of financial institutions in Cyprus and especially funds.
Christos is also a founding member of the Cyprus Investment Funds Association as well as a Board Member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus.

Previously, she served as Director and Regional Chief Operating Officer at Baker Tilly South East Europe, while her work experience spans more than twelve years in managerial positions in the private sector, including 9 years at PwC in Cyprus Milan and London. Natasa graduated from Oxford University with a first class honours degree in Modern Languages and Literature (French and Italian). She is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW). Apart from her native language, Natasa is also fluent in English, French and Italian.

He is also the engagement leader of high profile companies based in Qatar, including “InterContinental Hotel”, “Nestle” “Burger King”, and “Gucci”.

Seminar title: Presentation of Egypt Development Study
The Arab Spring threw Egypt into political turmoil that briefly challenged its position as one of the best countries in which to invest in Africa and the Middle East. Five years after the uprising, Egypt’s political transition now appears to be complete, but security challenges undermine economic recovery, and the country is underperforming in several key economic sectors despite overall bright prospects. Egypt Development study assesses the economy and its main sectors, the investment climate and socio-political context of the Arab World’s leading country. With its rather diversified economy, Egypt still has significant energy reserves to exploit and strong development potential of renewables, a promising food and drink industry, a budding IT-sector and a tourism sector set to rebound.

Sophia I Wanche is a senior geopolitical analyst at DIPA B.S. and scientific director of its MENA country studies series. With a PhD in Middle East Politics and International Relations, Sophia has more than 15 years of experience in conducting research and analysis on socio-political and economic developments. Her main geographical focus is the Middle East and she has a strong understanding of key industries that shape the region’s economies.
Sophia joined DIPA B.S. in 2015, and was previously employed in the non-governmental sector, as a project manager and bid writer, proficient in investigation and data interpretation. She has sound experience with international organisations and think tanks, including the United Nations and International Crisis Group. Multilingual and knowledgeable in humanitarian operations, her work for the UN included field experience in emergency relief and post-disaster development in Southeast Asia and the Horn of Africa.
Sophia also has a strong background in political and security risk, and brings this experience to the team in their wider strategic analyses. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Oriental Studies from Uppsala University in Sweden, and an M.A. and Doctorate from the University of Durham in the UK.
